A. Bishop letter : Ewa [Hawaii], to Sereno Edwards Bishop, Rochester, N.Y., 1848 Jan. 6.

Handwritten letter from father to his son, both Christian ministers from Hawaii, regarding family, church, and missionary matters in Hawaii and Polynesia. He writes of his hope for a visit to the United States within the next two or three years and the prospects for evangelizing in California and establishing a "Mission to the Catholiks [sic] of that country who are of Mexican stock...." He also writes of difficulties working with "the [Church] Board", his longing to leave the island and "...labor for the benefit of people who possess some elements of civilization. The Polynesian race I fear will never be civilized", Polynesian native habits, and the Mexican War with news of General Scott "at the gates of Mexico...." Also includes typescript transcription of letter.

Sereno Edwards Bishop (1827-1909), son of missionary Artemas Bishop (1795-1872), was born in Kaawaloa, Hawaii, educated at Amherst College, Mass., and returned to Hawaii as a teacher at Lahainaluna Seminary and as a missionary.
